This rhetorical element refers to the writer’s attitude toward their topic. It influences how the reader interprets the message, as the stance is reflected in the tone and content of the piece. In this class, we followed a genre framework but had the freedom to choose topics, allowing us to explore and express our views and attitudes.
In my writing, my stance influenced the purpose by helping me decide what to include in my assignments. Understanding my feelings about a topic guided my content and research choices to support my stance. It’s crucial that the audience becomes aware of this stance to fully grasp the message. However, there were instances where the purpose of a specific genre required a neutral stance. For example, in my Technical Description reflection, I wrote, ” However what truly makes Logitech keyboards special is their performance and responsiveness. Designed with precision and durability to handle usage Logitech keyboards offer keystrokes and smooth typing experiences that enable users to express their creativity and achieve their objectives with speed and precision.” Here, I needed to remain neutral because showing bias in a Technical Description does not align with the genre or my purpose to inform. Therefore, I decided to add additional information.
