“Negotiate your own writing goals and audience expectations regarding conventions of genre, medium, and rhetorical situation”

Align your writing goals and audience expectations with the rules of genre, medium, and context

In my understanding, the third-course learning outcome allowed us to remain focused on our work and its message, which is extremely important to do in engineering-related work. For example, in our Proposal, we needed to ensure our audience believed our plan was effective and worth investing in. To achieve this, we used our medium, stance, exigence, and more to convince them of our work’s promise. This was shown through the persuasive tone of our writing and the content we included to make our plan appealing. Figure 14 illustrates this. Using a confident tone in my persuasive memo as it determined whether the audience would consider our Proposal worthwhile. Regardless of how solid a plan is, if the team seems unqualified, the audience won’t be convinced, and our purpose will fail.
