“Engage in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond”
The fifth-course learning outcome helped us explore different communication methods, recognizing that some may be more suitable than others in certain situations. Throughout the semester, we examined various example papers from previous students and professionals, discussing and analyzing them in class. We assessed these pieces through multiple genre analyses both in class and at home.
Below is an example of a genre analysis we conducted for homework on specific proposals. We asked and answered essential questions about these documents, which helped us gain a clearer understanding of the Proposal format.
We applied this approach to every major and minor assignment throughout the semester. Despite my previous experience in Freshman Composition at CCNY, I found genre analysis to be a surprisingly useful tool for learning new genres.
